Su was nominated by President Joe Biden to be his permanent appointee for the secretary of labor position in February 2023. She is the first Asian American to serve in Biden's Cabinet as a department secretary. Before joining the Department of Labor, she was the California Labor Secretary under Governor Gavin Newsom and headed California's Division of Labor Standards Enforcement under Governor Jerry Brown.
