Complications and Health Issues in Treating Alcoholism

Alcoholics

The first treatment for alcoholism is to stop drinking alcohol. Going into hospital is the best thing, because generally people have no trouble giving up alcohol in the surroundings of a hospital ward. Tests, such as liver biopsy, can be done, and medical and social problems can be dealt with.

Withdrawal effects from alcohol are sometimes troublesome, and may make a person anxious and tremulous. Taking antianxiety or tranquillising drugs in the form of tablets, like propranolol or chlormethiazole (Hemineverin), is helpful for a short time. Alcoholic patients should not be given tranquillisers to take home because they may start to drink again and the combination of drink and drugs can be lethal. This combination was responsible for the British rock group The Who becoming a trio instead of a foursome.

Delirium Tremens
Sometimes withdrawal effects are very bad, and cause hallucinations and fits. This is delirium tremens (DTs) and needs to be treated quickly with drugs by injection. Most commonly used are shots of diazepam, and chlormethiazole by drip for a day or two. Some of the problems of the alcoholic are caused by poor nourishment and high dose of vitamins B and C by injection are needed.

Electroconvulsive Therapy and other Physical Treatments for Depression

electroconvulsive therapy

There are a number of non-drug treatments that may help relieve depression or bipolar disorder.

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)
In the 1930s, electroconvulsive therapy was noted to improve severe depression. The therapy was based on the mistaken notion that people with epilepsy did not get depressed, perhaps because of the repeated convulsions they experienced. At the time electroconvulsive therapy was first developed, few treatments were available for depressive illness.

Since antidepressants became available in 1959, ECT has been used less. However, it works well for some types of illness, and is particularly useful in certain conditions. If you are psychotically depressed with terrifying delusions and hallucinations, if you are determinedly suicidal, if you are severely debilitated from malnutrition, if you have heart disease, or if you are pregnant and can’t take medications, it may be your best choice. The procedure is physically safe and works much more rapidly than antidepressants.

Is It Safe To Drink Diet Soda During Pregnancy ?

Diet Soda During Pregnancy

There are so many things you shouldn’t do while pregnant. How much of a purist do you want to be? If you don’t want to expose your baby to possible toxins, then artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose should be avoided and the drinks of choice would be more-natural beverages (not such a bad idea). If you suffer from a disorder called phenylketonuria (PKU), then you already know you are not supposed to consume aspartame because you lack the ability to digest the amino acid phenylalanine, always found in aspartame.

If you aren’t a pregnancy purist and you would like to have a diet soda because you like the taste or want to cut calories, is aspartame safe to consume during pregnancy? To date, no study proves that aspartame has a negative influence on unborn children. We realize that books and Web sites discuss the evils of aspartame, but again, no definitive scientific evidence supports complete avoidance of artificial sweeteners.

Ways to Increase Workout Endurance

workout exercise

One of the best ways to avoid being bored during workouts is to always make them challenging. Challenging means that you push yourself to some new threshold that you never achieved before. However, you cannot do this unless you maintain a high level of endurance or ability to keep going during your workouts. Having a high level of endurance also keeps you from becoming too uncomfortable during exercise to the point where you can go no further. Here are some tips to help build your endurance so that you can get the most from your workouts.

Build your cardio fitness to increase endurance for other activities. With a healthy heart you will have increased stamina for all types of exercise because oxygenated blood is flowing efficiently throughout your body. You should do at least 30 minutes of intense cardio exercise each time you work out. This can be done on machines like the elliptical trainer, treadmill, or stationary bicycle. Or, if you are not using a gym, running or fast-paced walking are good too.
