About our Laphonza Butler news

Latest news on Laphonza Butler, the United States senator-designate from California, appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Dianne Feinstein on September 29, 2023. She will be the first Black woman and the first LGBTQ+ person to represent California in the Senate.

Butler has a long history of working in politics and labor. She was a senior adviser to Vice President Kamala Harris during her 2020 presidential campaign, a director of public policy at Airbnb, and a union leader for nurses, janitors, and in-home caregivers. She was also appointed by Governor Jerry Brown as a regent of the University of California in 2018, but resigned in 2021.
